I'd Rather Have a Talking Frog by Charles E. Price,
I'd Rather Have a Talking Frog is a book of Johnson City tales with a difference. Certainly there are ghost stories -- lots of them. But this volume also contains anecdotes, little-known facts, personal experiences, and historical sidelights not likely to be found in history books. These are told with humor and affection. Within these pages, you'll read about: -- Why some Indians, who decorated their faces for ceremonies, had to be careful when lighting their peace pipes. -- A ghost who haunts a laundry room. -- A hardy, frontier long hunter who weighed only 75 pounds. -- A man who fathered a child at age 95. -- The most unoriginal name for a Johnson City bank. -- The ghost of a long hunter that haunts the Nolichucky River. -- The surprising, real-life story behind the School of Health at East Tennessee State University. -- The haunted rocking chair. -- The ghost called "Edward" that haunts ETSU's Sigma Chi house. -- The creepy spook which lurk sin the old stacks in the Sherrod Library at ETSU. -- The man who claimed to have rocks on his farm that shed real blood. -- The freewheeling days of early television in Johnson City, when snowball fights on the weather set were not uncommon. -- The man who faced down a ghost in his own home. -- Tom Hodge's list of 10 events that changed Johnson City and upper East Tennessee forever. -- And Much, Much More...

Policing the Poor: From Slave Plantation to Public Housing by Neil Websdale,
Policing the Poor: From Slave Plantation to Public Housing by Neil Websdale,
While Many Applaud the apparent successes of community and saturation policing, Neil Websdale contends instead that such law enforcement initiatives oppress rather than protect the poor, particularly African Americans in large urban centers. Based on a groundbreaking ethnographic study of public housing projects in Nashville, Tennessee, he argues persuasively that community policing is a critical component of a criminal justice juggernaut designed to manage or regulate stigmatized populations, much like slave patrols served as agents for social control on Southern plantations. In a work that is sure to stir controversy and heated debate, Websdale draws on extensive field research, documentary sources, and interviews to illuminate how a criminal justice system deeply rooted in racism and slavery destroys the black family, creates a form of selective breeding, and undermines the civil rights gains of the 1960s. Unlike previous studies of community policing, which analyze programs through the lens of law enforcement, this book focuses on the history, experiences, and perspectives of the people whose lives are most affected by today's policing strategies. Skillfully blending the voices of project residents with a rich synthesis of historical, sociological, and criminological analysis, Websdale describes the situational, cultural, and economic circumstances of Nashville's poor; examines the policing of social upheaval by detailing events in the 1997 looting and burning of the Dollar General Store; considers African American kinship systems and the special circumstances of battered women; and discusses why the vice trades -- prostitution and selling drugs -- thrive in public housingprojects. Websdale's hard-hitting look at community policing and its negative impact on the urban poor provides a much-needed balance to prevailing optimistic views on the effectiveness of this new method of law enforcement.

The author explains he has "...tried to provide a balance of all the different types of stories that float around Jonesborough...handed down orally from person to person over the years. There is unexpected variety within these pages. There'll be no valets, no mints on pillows. This book looks at several famous haunted houses from the perspectives of those who have witnessed the hauntings and those who have investigated them. Nearly every community has a haunted house somewhere in its midst. In William Castle's 1959 mix of fright and fun, Vincent Price plays the macabre host offering $10,000 to guests who survive the night. One story is actually from an account that appeared in the town's newspaper in 1875. According to folklorist Price, nearly every historic house in this oldest town in Tennessee boasts at least one resident spook. Geoffrey Rush portrays the twisted big shot who throws a birthday bash for his wife (Famke Janssen) at an abandoned insane asylum. But are these "spirited" places truly haunted, or are there more mundane explanations? The going rate is $1,000,000 in the effects-filled Dark Castle Entertainment 1999 remake. Along with stories about the ghost that hated the Confederacy and the ghost that hated the Confederacy and the ghost that kept bumping into people, you will find chilling tales of a ceiling that dripped blood and a murderous tree that stalks the countryside looking for unsuspecting victims. Historic Jonesborough is rich in traditions -- and in ghosts.
